Throughout her childhood and teen years, Ankita enjoyed flipping and flying through the air as a competitive gymnast. Finally tiring of constant soreness, perpetual injury, and the anguish that comes from a sport that demands perfection, she decided to hang up her grips, but found that traditional exercise like running and lifting weights didn’t have the same adrenaline rush as gymnastics, nor did she feel as mobile or flexible.
While in college at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, a power yoga studio opened nearby. After a few vinyasa classes, Ankita was hooked! For the last 12 years, yoga has been a mainstay in Ankita’s life, providing benefits both on and off the mat. Taking her practice to the next level Ankita received her 200 hour teacher training certificate through Prana Power Yoga and is now a proud member of the Broga® Yoga teaching team. She has a special fondness for teaching yoga to absolute beginners, breaking down poses and helping students learn the fundamentals of yoga.
When not teaching yoga and Broga classes at The Breathing Room in Central Square, Ankita can either found in her office at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where she is responsible for global marketing and integrated research, development and commercial strategy for the company’s portfolio of Cystic Fibrosis medicines, or on her bike in the Boston suburbs.

Whether it was running, swinging kettlebells, spinning or show jumping, all my life I pushed my body hard. But, something was missing. Then, one day eight years ago, I stumbled upon a Anusara yoga workshop and my yoga journey began.
Before long, I realized that I could still push my body physically but balance it with my mind. Some call it the Ah Ha Moment. Whatever it was, I was transformed and my path was changed forever. When I teach, I seek to give my students the confidence to get deep into poses and the opportunity to find their breath while finding some peace on their mat. My challenging slow flow classes, taught to contemporary music, are alignment-based, playful and woven with humor and Buddhist mindfulness.
I am honored to be part of the Broga® Yoga Team and look forward to sharing the benefits of Broga with both men and women in the Boston area.
In addition to practicing yoga, I work as a non-profit fundraising and event planning consultant and am on the same path as my students: balancing work, family and play while being present and seeking the calm between the tranquility and the storm of connecting with my body and mind.

Tim found yoga at mid-life. After trying a number of different yoga styles, he walked into a steamy power yoga class and hasn’t been the same since. It was a reincarnation of sorts. After that class he was “… physically exhausted, emotionally elated, calm, and content at the same time. [He] felt alive.” For Tim, now everything is done through the lens and practice of yoga. “I come to practice to get grounded; to be challenged; to clear away the cruft and toxins we all come in contact with day to day. I’m rarely disappointed. I always leave class refreshed, smiling and a more loving human being than I was before class; just ask my kids.”
Tim went on to become a 200 hour registered yoga teacher through O2 Yoga in Somerville, MA where he taught for a couple of years before competing commitments and a debilitating back injury curtailed his practice and teaching. He has continued his study with well over 300 hours of training from many internationally known yoga teachers.
Tim is very excited to be part of the Broga® Team and it’s mission to bring the lifelong benefits of yoga to more men. He is also a certified health coach. You can check him out at Tim Griffin :: Health Coach.

Ian Gumpel grew up riding everything with wheels: skateboards, BMX bikes, trials motorcycles, and mountain bikes. In the winters he would go snowboarding. Ian and his friends were always pushing to go higher and farther. While Ian was living in a LA he was introduced to surfing, an activity that has become an essential part of his life.
After meeting Robert Sidoti in 2008, Ian began practicing Broga® and was immediately drawn to it. He felt a sense of healing balance, both physically and mentally, after each class; a sensation that he had never experienced before. He became interested in the philosophy of Broga® and the positive effects it had on his life and other men in the classes. This quickly led him to take a Broga Teacher Training and to get his 200hr RYT with Sherry Sidoti at the Fly Yoga School.
Broga plays a huge role in sustaining his active lifestyle and he hopes to share this practice that promotes health, clarity, and strength. Ian knows that Broga benefits all kinds of people at all levels of physical shape. One of Ian’s goals is to bring Broga to volunteer and professional first responders because they have a lifestyle that requires great mental and physical strength.

Dale was overweight and out of shape reaching the milestone of 50, when he injured his back playing with his 2 young sons. After a year of PT off and on, and taking prescription pain killers to get through the day, he finally decided to have an L5S1 microdiscectomy. Everything went well, and after a few months of performing the exercises to keep his core strong to protect his back he returned to his decidedly unhealthy habits. As for a lot of people who don’t learn from their experience, it took a second herniation of the L5S1 disk 3 months later to make any difference on his lifestyle. The second injury made the first injury and subsequent pain seem like a pinprick. 2 days after the Chicago Bears lost in the Super Bowl to the Indianapolis Colts in February, 2007, the second microdiscectomy was performed. This time the surgery didn’t go as well, the rehab was longer and more difficult. But after several sessions of PT, he was healthy enough to get back to work. But something had changed. The cold reality of a back injury had implanted a spike in his brain. That spike was FEAR! Fear of pain, fear of loss of movement, fear of a lifelong addiction to pain killers. Something had to be done differently. That something was joining a local health club, and keeping up the PT exercises he had learned, adding Pilates, strength training, and trying Yoga for the first time. Over the years (6 +), Yoga became so much more than a mat exercise. In May of 2011, he took a weeklong intensive to study Yin Yoga with Paul and Suzee Grilley, finished a 200 hour RYT with Focus Yoga in 2012, became a certified TRX Suspension trainer in 2013, and became a certified Broga Yoga Level 1/ 2 teacher in August of 2013. Using the awareness, breathe control and alignment principles learned from many years on the mat during Yoga practice and applying those concepts to TRX strength training he developed a form of Yoga called YogaTRX. The strength, balance and movement in 3 dimensional space that is developed using the TRX trainer and resistance bands allows greater control and strength in Yoga practice. The two together create something greater than either by themselves. Now 58, healthy and motivated, Yoga is his path and bringing it to men is his passion.

After years of participating in demanding sports such as motocross, jui jitsu, jeet kune do, kickboxing, snowboarding and rugby, Arlen was in need of some physical healing. Years of therapy with both traditional and alternative medicine made him feel good for the short term, but he still had aching joints and chronic low back pain.
A believer that the body can heal itself under the right circumstances, Arlen started yoga to find the pain free body that he once knew. Starting his practice at home with a few videos he was eventually dragged to a studio by his wife and he fell in love with the practice.
Arlen took his 200-hour certification in Vinyasa yoga with Ryan Leier, and has received further training in Restorative, Yin, Hatha and Yoga for Kids. With so many people suffering from physical pain due to imbalances in the body, Arlen takes an alignment-based approach to his classes. He encourages his students to listen to their bodies, building the foundation of their practice from there, while at the same time challenging their comfort zones.
As a TRX instructor as well, Arlen is now very excited to bring his background and experience in yoga and fitness to more men as Canada’s first certified Broga® Instructor.
Loving the family life Arlen spends any spare moment having fun in crazy adventures with his beautiful wife Tammy and two kids, Xander and Zara. Part of his future plans are to take the family back to Monterosso, Italy, where he and Tammy were married.

Colin grew up surfing and playing baseball and soccer in Florida. While in college at Duke in North Carolina, he found his true athletic passion in rugby. After many years of playing competitively and multiple injuries, he decided to search for a safer athletic outlet. While recovering from his third knee surgery, Colin found yoga in Massachusetts. Yoga and its physical, mental, and emotional benefits provided him with the confidence to take up new found passions of Brazilian jiu jitsu and judo.
Colin is now a proud member of the Broga® teaching team. He is also an instructor in MovNat, a physical education and fitness system based on the full range of natural human movement skills, and he is certified in the Functional Movement Screen, a system to analyze human movement patterns and apply corrective exercises. The readings and teachings of Pema Chodron have been an inspiration.
“We cannot be present and run our storyline at the same time.”~Pema Chodron
The simplicity of yoga – be present, let go, and listen intently to your body’s messages. Yoga has opened doors that I had never dreamed imaginable. As a student, I arrive at my mat without expectation ready to experience and savor my practice. Please don’t misunderstand me, I arrive that way. The feelings that arise during each asana can flip my world upside–down. Pure joy of yoga- releasing control, trusting myself, and truly living in the moment. As a teacher, I have the honor of being an invited guest to each class encouraging movement and healing breath, growth and transformation. We all practice as a community. We learn from each other. “We laugh, smile, go in, fall out and accept our paths as they slowly unfold. It’s all good.”
Mary is currently working towards her Master’s degree in special education. She works as a literature teacher at Learning Prep School in Newton. Mary resides in Watertown with her wonderful family and brindled pal, Charley Brown.

Marlon Taylor, BA, MBA, RYT-200 and ACE certified Personal Strength Trainer lives in Marshfield, MA with his family. His interests include fitness training, biking, skiing and sailing. Marlon’s current career in fitness and yoga was preceded by nearly 15 years in surgical device sales with a focus on spinal surgery and implants. “Working closely with both orthopedic spinal surgeons and neurosurgeons left me with a deep appreciation for neck and back injuries which can arise out of years of poor body posture, inattention to a healthy diet and inadequate exercise.”
Since completion of a 200 hour yoga teacher training course at Sanctuary Studios in Plymouth, MA, Marlon has immersed himself in combining his prior professional experience, his yoga training and his current fitness career with his goal of bringing the
benefits of yoga to more people, especially men. “I had practiced yoga for nearly 12 years before I discovered Broga. It was the answer to the growing feeling that something was missing from my yoga practice. With Broga, I had finally found a form of yoga that was vigorous, safe, challenging and in synch with what men’s bodies and minds really needed. In fact, Broga inspired me to become certified as an instructor of both yoga and Broga. ”
“I firmly believe that bit by bit, year after year, we create patterns in both our bodies and minds that no longer serve us. In fact these postures, habits and repeated acts of neglect pull us further away from goals of health, contentment and ease in both mind and body. I have found it is only through the practice of yoga that we can identify these patterns and then begin the process of addressing them in real and meaningful ways. I
love how perfectly the combination of a deeply satisfying yoga practice and traditional fitness and sports activities can achieve increases in strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. The changes we create are not only satisfying but they are also profound, lasting and real.”
After practicing yoga, on and off, for about 8 years I decided to take a Yoga Teacher Training Class. I completed my 200 hour yoga teachers training, in April 2009, with Michael Stein of Ashtanga Yoga of New Paltz. I have been teaching yoga in New Paltz, Wallkill, Walker Valley, Rosendale, and Stone Ridge since.
I have since put together a gentle Vinyasa flow yoga class, based on the principles of hatha yoga, that is suitable for people who are generally not athletic or have become sedentary due to working in front of a computer or sitting all day. The class will increase strength and flexibility in the body as well as allow the subtle energies contained in the nervous system to flow more freely. It is a gentle but flowing form of yoga that produces an aerobic workout. I call the class – Gentle Flow. This class is much easier on the wrists and back then many other Vinyasa style yoga classes.
Prior to becoming a licensed Broga® Yoga Teacher, I began teaching a men’s only class for a group of guys. I’m really excited to be a member of the Broga® Yoga Teaching community and hope to see you at one of my classes soon.
